On 20 January 2025, an inspiring gathering took place at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya for the “Live to Lead: My Journey from Kota Bharu to the Palace of Justice” event.
The event commenced with a warm welcome from Dato’ Edwin Michael, Vice Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Yayasan Tan Sri Profesor Ahmad Ibrahim. This was followed by a thought-provoking special tribute and delivery of citation by YBhg. Tan Sri Zainun Ali, whose reflections resonated deeply with the audience. The evening’s pinnacle was the much-anticipated session with Chief Justice YAA Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat. Her Ladyship shared the journey that led her to the highest position in the Malaysian judiciary, from key moments in her upbringing to revisiting her landmark judgments.

The event brought together trailblazing women in law to share their stories, insights, and visions for a better future. From breaking barriers to shaping policies, their legacies continue to empower and inspire.

“Passing The Torch” is a series of talks which aim to bridge distinguished legal
minds with young legal practitioners in an intimate setting, enabling a smooth and
productive learning and mentoring experience
Its inaugural session, “Passing the Torch: Judicial Wisdom for the Next Generation”, offers
junior legal practitioners an intimate mentorship session with Her Excellency Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat, Malaysia’s first female Chief Justice. The participants, hailing from
various law firms, gained rare insight into Her Excellency’s values and experiences.

MALLAC is YTSPAI’s flagship initiative in the form of a one-day convention that
aims to act as a platform for critical discussions on issues surrounding the legal aid
landscape. The event has brought together participants from diverse backgrounds and
featured distinguished speakers from Malaysia and Singapore.
Each edition of MALLAC is centred on a specific theme that reflects contemporary concerns in legal aid. The 2024 theme, “Justice Unbound: Empowering Law Students for Legal Aid,” emphasised the role of the next generation of lawyers and examined critical topics including the implementation of legal aid in tertiary education as well as the intersection between legal aid and artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, the 2025 theme, “Bridging the Gap: Law Made Simple, Justice Made Accessible,” focused on the lived realities of legal aid and the exploration of strategic resources to strengthen and improve the system.
MALLAC garnered support from various stakeholders across the Government, the Judiciary and the legal fraternity. In MALLAC 2024, we were honoured to have YAB Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, officiating the event, and Her Excellency Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat, the then-Chief Justice of Malaysia, to deliver the keynote address. During MALLAC 2025, the event was officiated by YB Tuan M. Kulasegaran V. Murugeson, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), with the keynote address delivered by The Hon. Justice Datuk Seri Utama Wan Ahmad Farid bin Wan Salleh, the Chief Justice of Malaysia.
